That is our subgenre, because every band ever falls into your nonsensical subgenre that just doesn’t matter. He used to introduce some of the songs saying, “We’re often referred to as a ‘heavy metal pirate band,’ but we prefer the term ‘Heavy Mahogany,’” because of the acoustic instruments It started off as a joke, and then we were trying to think of titles for the third album and we just went with it. Who came up with the term for your subgenre, “Heavy Mahogany?” We also have stand-up bass, Irish bouzouki, tin whistle, mandolin and a percussion contraption that we call “the Oddkit.” Riven has kind of constructed this contraption where it straps to his body instead of having to sit down and play it. The toy piano is exactly what it sounds like. The most talked-about, I’d say, would be the toy piano and the accordion, because only the coolest people can play those instruments. Tell me about the different kinds of instruments that you use. It’s a tough question to answer… In the band the characters are pirates, or some form of time-traveling thief, but us outside of the band, the musicians, no, we don’t dress up like that all the time Everyone played some sort of weird instrument and the nautical theme just went with the whole Echo the Dolphin vibe, and it escalated rom there.Īre you perennial pirates? Is it just your personas or do you live the pirate life? Woflbeard, being a pirate himself, kind of just started it from the group of everyone who showed up. Where did you get the idea for The Dread Crew of Oddwood?īasically, Wolfbeard O’Brady and a few of the original members all met at Echo Con, which was a convention for the Sega game Echo the Dolphin, and they were basically the only people who showed up. Probably the sole group in their self-proclaimed metal subgenre “Heavy Mahogany,” Oddwood are a puppet-slaying, whiskey drinking, all acoustic pirate metal sextet with an affinity for the strange, so hide your women and children as we chat with “quartermaster” Stark Cordwain and learn about the Dread Crew. But we still had fun doing it, and we'd do it all again, so we hope you will enjoy Rise to Power as much as we enjoyed creating it.What makes metal music truly “metal?” Is it blast beats, electric guitars with heavy distortion, or is it just an idea? Straight from the depths of Davy Jones’ Locker, or as we call it in the 21st Century, San Diego, THE DREAD CREW OF ODDWOOD prove that metal music is made with pure attitude. We have soldiered on through cold winds, artificial rain, power generator failures, battery drainage, hypothermia and various other minor discomforts. Robert: The video itself was a challenging, and sometimes extreme experience, it made us cover huge distances and shoot for 12 hours in harsh conditions. This was very hard work in spartan conditions, as nights at Polish seaside are not too hot. I am glad that we were able to create a lyrical concept for this and shoot a music video containing drowning scenes, along with us floundering in the actual sea, that is 600km from our city of origin. From the beginning I was thinking about creating a song about drowning, thus underwater sound effects here and there. Like in case of most songs on the album, I've created around 20 versions with different arrangements to end up with my favourite songs on the album. Mateusz: This song was voted out from the album at some point, but I decided to work on it some more, because I really loved the intro melody and how all the instruments suddenly jump out of the imaginary water. Here's what guitarists Mateusz Gajdzik and Robert Zembrzycki had to say: Black Vengeance is something of a concept record, and this particular track takes place at a key juncture in the story whilst simultaneously showcasing the bands unique take on hard hitting, no frills, melodic death metal making for a rewarding listen. This swashbuckling video is meant to capture this sense of pure oceanic torment and to show the listener what it feels like to be buffeted by cruel waves as you choke for air.
